It is with profound sadness that Wounds Australia shares the news of the unexpected passing of Dr Gregory Schultz PhD on 12 April 2024. Dr Schultz was a Director of Institute for Wound Research and a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, and a luminary in the field of wound care research. Prof. Schultz’s groundbreaking research significantly advanced our understanding of the role of bacterial biofilms in diabetic wounds and their impact on chronic inflammation and the proteases that impair wound repair. His dedication to the scientific community and his innovative work have left an indelible mark on the field of wound care, providing invaluable insights that have been instrumental in improving patient outcomes. Prof. Schultz was not only a respected researcher who contributed scientific advances with the publication of over 450 papers (and over 38,000 citations) but he was a great mentor and contributor to Wounds Australia and Australasian Wound and Tissue Repair Society conferences. His presentations were always met with enthusiasm for their depth of knowledge and practical applicability. Prof. Schultz was also a wonderful advocate for and contributor to the Wounds Australia journal, Wound Practice and Research, of which he was a valued editorial board member and an energetic and generous reviewer. We extend our deepest condolences to the Schultz family during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed and remembered as a true gentleman and leader with huge enthusiasm for all things wound-related. His legacy will endure through all the countless patients and professionals he has helped throughout his distinguished career. Thank you to Wounds Australia Board Director Dr Zlatko Kopecki for writing this tribute. |
