Professional learning update: March 2024

Our 2024 professional learning schedule, which got off to an incredible start with a hotly attended session on lower limb swelling in February, continued with two excellent events in Queensland and WA last month.

‘Are You Thin-Skinned?’ in Brisbane on 7 March was eagerly anticipated following its rescheduling from 2023. We were delighted to welcome expert practitioners from the Queensland medical community to speak on a range of skin-related topics including benign skin lesions, pressure injury prevention and developing wound management plans in a rehabilitation setting. 

Around 80 people – from emerging to veteran practitioners – joined us in person and online to learn from Dermatology Registrar Dr Michael Cao (Queensland Institute of Dermatology and Princess Alexandra Hospital), Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Geriatric and Rehabilitation Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital Jenny Kohlhardt, and Tracy Nowicki, Clinical Nurse Consultant at the Prince Charles Hospital. It was a valuable exploration of the complexities and challenges of maintaining and protecting the skin integrity of older Australians. 

Thanks to these generous presenters for sharing their insights and expertise, to the Wounds Australia Queensland Committee for a brilliantly organised event and to our valued industry partners for supporting it.

Wound Care Fundaments in WA

Next up: ‘Wound Care Fundaments’ at the beautiful Boola Katitjin centre at Murdoch University on 9 March. 

More than 60 people attended this half-day event facilitated by the Wounds Australia WA Committee, whose multidisciplinary members spoke, led workshops on wound assessment and management, answered participant questions and ran a wound care quiz enjoyed by all.

Thanks to Wounds Australia Fellow Professor Keryln Carville of Silverchain and Curtin University, Murdoch University Lecturer in Nursing/Community Nursing Wound Care Lead Holly Clegg, Silverchain Nurse Practitioner Wound Care Margaret Edmondson and WACHS Wheatbelt Wound Clinic Lead Minnie Hall – and the broader WA Committee – for a hands-on, interactive and engaging day.
